Speech and Language Pathologist / Specialisation in Early Childhood Intervention

Having obtained my Degree at the University of Cape Town, I now have more than 15 years of clinical experience working as a Speech and Language Pathologist. I continue to update my knowledge through my private practice and trainings. Following my specialization in Early Childhood Intervention, providing assessment and therapy services to children with communication difficulties are my areas of preference. I firmly believe that early screening and intervention are essential in facilitating each child to reach his/her true potential. I work in close collaboration with parents to allow them to understand their child better and support them in their development.

What is a Speech and Language Pathologist?

A Speech and Language Pathologist conducts screening, assessment and follow-up of children and adults with language and communication difficulties. He/She starts by assessing the nature and the severity of the difficulties, before setting up an individualised plan corresponding to the child or adult. He/She also supports the parents and the family in maintaining or improving the patient’s communication skills. A Speech and Language Pathologist often forms part of a multidisciplinary team with other health professionals. He/She can work in mainstream or specialised school, hospitals, in private practice, in NGOs and conduct home visits.

JOFFREY BODET

Psychologist / PhD in Developmental Psychology

I have been trained in psychological assessment since 2001, in the CRA of Montpellier, which is the first ‘Centre de Ressource Autisme’ to be created in France. Since that time, my aim has always been to link theoretical and practical knowledge. I have therefore developed my theoretical knowledge through the writing of my doctorate thesis, of research work and continuous trainings in the field of developmental disorders. My practical knowledge is based on more than 20 years of experience in institutions and in private consultations in the fields of psychological assessment, diagnosis and specialised education.

What is a Psychologist?

The psychologist plays a role in the diagnostic procedure, by assessing the intellectual, cognitive and adaptive level of the person in the areas of verbal processing, perception, memory, processing speed, etc. He/She also conducts short or long term therapeutic follow-up. In this therapeutic function, the psychologist proposes a listening space and communication to accompany the person to change, by using different tools. Finally, the psychologist always works in partnership with the family. He/She proposes family sessions to transmit information, undertake guidance or to further deepen therapeutic follow-up.

CÉLINE SCHOBBEN

Neuropsychologist

Born to a Mauritian mother and a Belgian father, I completed my psychology studies (University of Liège) in Belgium before moving to Mauritius, where I have been living and working for about ten years.

I specialize in neuropsychology but am also deeply interested in the psychological well-being of children, adolescents, and their families. I have had the privilege of working in the field of disability, supporting children excluded from the mainstream education system, as well as serving as a psychologist in a private secondary school.

Cognitive, behavioral, and emotional therapy (CBET) is an approach that resonates with me, which is why I am currently pursuing further training in this area.

My role at the Libellule Center involves conducting neuropsychological assessments to identify an individual’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, thereby providing valuable and complementary insights that contribute to diagnosis and the implementation of necessary treatments and/or accommodations.

But what exactly is neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a specialty that studies the relationships between the brain and behavior. It assesses and addresses cognitive and behavioral disorders caused by brain dysfunctions, often resulting from brain injuries, neurological conditions, or developmental disorders.
Neuropsychologists use neuropsychological tests to evaluate functions such as memory, attention, and executive functions. This helps to understand how these functions are affected and to develop tailored rehabilitation strategies, often in collaboration with other professionals.

An assessment requires intervention from several professionals and necessitates several appointments by each professional. Thus, conducting a complete and detailed assessment is a task requiring considerable time. A complete assessment is therefore carried out over several weeks.
The final appointment will be organised about 4 weeks after the last assessment session.

Documents to be
presented during
the first appointment:

  • Birth certificate
  • Health record book
  • Assessment and progress reports from other professionals (if available)
  • School reports

Therapy follow-up

The Libellule Centre provides regular follow-up of children, adolescents and adults. The centre therefore provides therapy carried out by different health professionals:

Occupational Therapists

to promote the development of gross motor skills, fine motor skills, handwriting, independence and to improve sensory integration skills

Speech and Language Pathologists

to promote the development of receptive language, expressive language as well as academic skills (reading and writing)

Psychologists

to accompany children and their family in identifying emotional problems that could be impacting on the overall development of the children. Our Psychologists also propose parental guidance, that is accompanying the parents to practice positive discipline in the family context.

Neuropsychologists

to set up cognitive remediation therapy in the aim of improving attention, memory and/or executive functioning. The expected results are a positive impact on functional deficits that affect everyday life.

The therapy sessions proposed at the centre last a minimum of 45 minutes and are generally organised on a weekly basis. It is therefore possible to set up intensive therapy sessions at our centre to ensure optimal development of the child.

Trainings

Having a multidisciplinary team allows us to cover a large theoretical field concerning the overall development of children and adolescents (cognitive, emotional, motor, language, socialisation, academic).
In addition, our team now has diverse experience in the areas of early diagnosis, specialised follow-up, specialised educational techniques, parent guidance, therapy,…
It thus seemed important to enable the Mauritian population to benefit from our theoretical and practical knowledge.
The Libellule Centre therefore proposes and animates:
  • Tailor-made trainings

Tailor-made trainings for different populations (parents, health professionals, education professionals). These trainings highlight practical tools, in order to facilitate the application of theoretical knowledge in your everyday practice.

Our trainings are interactive and dynamic and we put emphasis on exchanges, sharing, video presentations, etc. Our trainings are conducted by a minimum of two presenters from our team of specialists (Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Psychologist and Neuropsychologist). This formula allows participants to obtain different professional views on the same theme thus making the trainings more lively and dynamic.

  • Libellule workshop (« Les soirées Libellule »)

The Libellule Centre freely organises workshops once every trimester. The objective is to exchange and share ideas about themes that have been chosen in advance and relating to health and/or education.

These workshops are open to a wide range of participants, ranging from parents to health and educational professionals, as well as people simply interested by the proposed theme.
    During these workshops :
The Libellule Centre team will share and sensitize the public on a set theme (positive discipline, intellectual giftedness, learning difficulties,…)
Visiting professionals can present their practice and respond to the public’s questions
Other activities will be proposed as the year goes by

  • Parent support group

Realising that too few opportunities of sharing and learning amongst parents exist in Mauritius and with an increasing demand, the Libellule Centre has decided to propose support groups for parents. These groups have the aim of supporting parents with everyday challenging situations. These exchanges between parents encourages learning amongst peers and reflexivity exercises, the individual learning from others as much as he/she learns from himself/herself.

Different themes will be proposed throughout the year based on the interest and requests of parents.

  • Clinical meetings (« Groupe d’analyse des pratiques professionnelles » )

The notion of “practise analysis” implies a method of training or of perfecting based on analysis of professional experiences (recent or ongoing), presented by their authors within a group composed of persons in the same profession.
The Libellule Centre organises, based on a precise plan, exchanges and questions between one professional and a group of professionals, to gain practical working ideas, as well as a general reflection concerning the establishment’s practice.
The clinical meeting is conducted by a minimum of two presenters amongst Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Psychologist and Neuropsychologist. This formula allows participants to obtain different professional views on the same theme thus making the sessions more lively and dynamic.
